I suppose most automotive engineers will have to purchase a copy of this handbook. But: it’s not that good. It reads more like a legal treatise than an engineering book. It’s mostly text and schematics with relatively few equations. The book is not mathematically detailed enough to write simulation or optimization computer programs. Therefore it’s more appropriate for technicians.

All I can state for now is that the book is INCREDIBLY rough on my eyes. The pages are extremely thin (showing text from the other side of the page) and the text is very very small. If I could get this in a readable font size on quality paper, I would be ecstatic.
I have a feeling I will end up selling this. I simply cannot stare at it for more than 30 seconds without my eyes crossing. What a shame.

The Bosch Handbook, is an excellent reference book for automotive engineers and technicians. It contains a lot of useful information on all aspects of the automobile, as well as background information, from theory to policies. “Specialists” will be able to traverse this book with ease. Those who are not into the math can still find it very informative. Most of all, unlike other automotive textbooks or references, this book is up to date. This will be useful for those who need to worry about things like emission policies, standard practices, and bleeding edge technologies.
Being a German company, the Handbook does come across as written by Germans (even though the tone and style are not as dry as some German textbooks). There are the rare typos and grammatical errors, and passages and expressions that make more sense in German than in English. Of course, the Handbook is quite Euro-centric. North American and Asian perspectives are often lacking. Product placements from Bosch and its affiliates are also commonplace. Watch out for the Bosch logo in the diagrams!
I am mostly an “engine” guy, so I am more interested in the engine and fuel sides of things. I do notice that quite a lot things that have been mentioned in one section will show up verbatim in another section. I don’t know if this is also the case for the rest of the book. It is hard to say if this is a good thing. Repetition might be a better alternative than flipping through the pages.
Despite some minor issues, the Bosch Handbook is still the definitive guide for this topic. This is a must-have for those who are serious automotives.
